Bienvenue, hola, salam, hello! My name is Keavash Assani and welcome to my page. With my passion for science and language I am triple majoring in Biology with a concentration in Bio-medical Sciences and Spanish, and Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. This past year I have decided to obtain a certificate in Spanish Social Work and Health Sciences because of my experiences volunteering at Santa Maria's Community Service Inc. My job was to interpret, measure blood pressure, and help the needs of Spanish speaking individuals in East Price Hill, Cincinnati. One day while helping an individual, I asked if he would like his blood pressure taken. He didn't really know what that was, so I explained it to him in Spanish. After I was done, I discussed the results with him. His face lit up, and I asked what he was thinking. He told me how he had never had his blood pressure been taken and that it was great to be offered that service. He told me that it was so relieving to him that he could have someone discuss things with him in Spanish because his English is so poor and that whenever he would go to the doctor, he was always confused at what they were telling him. He said it meant so much that I could do that for him and thanked me over and over again. This was the moment where I knew that my Spanish degree would pay off. That I would be able to make a difference in the medical field. It also pushed me to acquire the certificate so that I could learn about the social work and health aspect of Spanish more concretely.
My ultimate goal is to obtain my MD/PhD and specialize in nephrology, so that I can become a nephrologist and establish my own laboratory. When I obtain my degree, I hope to become a Doctor without Borders so that I can help deliver medical aid to people whom are most in need that are affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters and limited health care. After helping with this cause for some time, my plan is to start up my own practice and eventually collaborate with fellow physicians to start -up our own hospital. By doing this, I will not only be able to help thousands of people per year, but millions.
As a junior I have had the opportunity to become actively involved on my campus as a leader in several organizations. I am actively involved in organizations on campus which include the University Honors Association, Circle K International, National Kidney Foundation, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Minority Pre-Med Students (MAPS), Persian Student Association. I hope to gain an experience of a lifetime here while learning information that will allow me to go into medical school after I attain my undergraduate degree. I If you have any questions about anything feel free to leave a question in the comment section!
