Analytical Conclusion & Overall Conclusion
Our world has found itself in a bit of a tussle. The environment today is struggling. We have factories that contaminate our air and our water, cars that spew their toxic fumes into the air, and waste being dumped into the rivers and oceans. We are polluting the air and killing our Earth. There is so much that can be done, so much that needs to be done. The issue affects everyone, on every level; pollution is not something we can just put in the back of our cupboards, forget about it and wait till it gets old and smelly before we do something about it. We have to act now or suffer the consequences. The issue needs to be dealt with on a local level, state level, national level and a global level. People do a great job of speaking their minds and getting work done when they can see a problem and they don’t like it. The tricky thing about pollution is we can’t necessarily see it at all times. Regardless if we can see it all the time or not it still affects us. Poor air quality has been known to affect asthma patients by initiating asthma attacks and making asthma worse in general. It has caused lung damage and even death in factory workers such as workers in steel factories and waste incinerating factories. Pollution in some towns even cause them to have days where they issue a safety hazard that people cannot go outside. Everyone is affected by pollution. The goal of my genres to educate, bring awareness and make people notice pollution just a little bit more on several different levels. The genres that I chose to construct include two billboard adds, one pamphlet, and one PowerPoint.
The first genre that I chose to construct was the billboards. In these billboards I really wanted the average day people driving along the roads to see these billboard and understand that pollution is prevalent and show them that something needs to be done about it. After doing research on several billboards I found that billboards are meant to be visually appealing. They are meant to be contain little text, be easily readable and meant to stick out so that you remember them. In the first poster I chose a photo of a factory. I changed the photo to a black and white setting and then constructed the bubbles that contain different toxins that are put in the air by factories as well as individuals. I put them in bubble format because it represents kind of a molecule feeling. I have them rising out of the smoke and into the air to show that that is where these particles are going. The red color added is to make the molecules stand out. At the bottom of the billboard I have the saying “Be the change that saves the world.” I wanted this to be a short phrase that people can read quickly as they are driving away that makes an impact which is why I chose what I did. In the upper right hand corner I gave the reader a fake website that they could educate themselves about the environment and learn what could be done to help deter the environmental degradation. For the second poster I put two photos next to each other to distinguish between a healthy clean environment relative to an environment cluttered by smog and overcrowded with cars in the street. I feel this is a powerful comparison that makes people really think about what they are putting into the air. The text in this billboard is incredibly short, but powerful I believe as well. I said “Don’t just drive by, do something.” It makes a message because in the right photo there is several cars stacked upon each other on the freeway with smog in the air and on the left side it shows that there are alternate forms of energy and alternate forms of transportation that need to be used. I included a fake website in this poster as well so people can actually do something about the issue. Overall I focused on making this genre simple and relied heavily upon the contrast or dominating colors to compete for viewers’ attention. My next genre is more focused towards people in a city setting.
For my second genre I chose to make an educational pamphlet. This pamphlet is specifically designed to relate to the Cincinnati resident. In order to construct this pamphlet I researched several different pamphlets to get an idea of the type of format that was desirable. To produce this pamphlet I started off with having a picture of Cincinnati and bellow it highlighted blue I put a eye grabbing text. This text is to easily grab the reader’s attention and make them want to look through it. In pamphlets headings are very important and guide the reader efficiently. I felt the best way to make an impact on the city reader was to first educate them. To do this I told them about how Cincinnati became the #8 most polluted city in the United States. After that I described what the inversion season and then led to the contributing factors of pollution, and then affects that it has on people. Not only did I want to educate the reader but I wanted to tell the reader how they could help and make a difference. A lot of the time I put myself in the position of the reader and asked “what would I want to know?” so that I could formulate the pamphlet. I also kept in mind that pamphlets in general can be persuasive in manner, so I focused on putting the message out there that they need to do something. I really focused on this in my concluding statement.
The final genre that I chose to create was a PowerPoint targeted towards a specific health group such as the EPA. The purpose of this PowerPoint was to show the EPA the discourse that is occurring on multiple levels. This type of rhetoric is generally used for well educated audiences and can be used on varying basis. For this PowerPoint I wanted to make something that would be easily presentable something that would persuade the EPA to do something about the environment than what is being done. In order to make a strong PowerPoint I again focused on strong titles and meaningful text as well as visual appearance overall. I chose a brown template because it is professional and pops out at the same time. I chose a border that was brown and contained a white background to make the text pop better. I kept the text short in the essay to avoid overcrowding and I put big ideas/bullets that could be talked about during a presentation of the issue. In order to keep the audience visually active I included pictures showing the effects of pollution. The look of this PowerPoint as well as the strong facts included in this presentation make the genre visually appealing as well as persuasive to the audience it is being presented to.
By thoroughly examining my discussed genres, I was able create strong ones of my own. While writing each genre I made sure to focus on the audience, the purpose of each, the format as well as the characteristics of the genre that would tie in with my message. Each of these genres that I created branch out to specific groups. I believe that they would be accepted by those audiences and respected. I also believe each fulfills their distinct purposes for what is was made. I have gained and learned quite a bit from forming this project. It has impacted me in ways that have made me myself want to make a difference and do something about the issue. I hope that it makes others feel the same way.
