English 2089
This past fall semester I was enrolled in an English 2089 honors seminar. It was a great experience that improved my grammar and writing abilities in various writing styles. This experience involved many aspects that challenged me as a student and person. The first part of the semester we analyzed and discussed the book World War Z which was based on a dystopian society. We learned about discourse communities and how they played different roles in the book. The thing that made this course an honors course was the fact that it was based largely on reflection and relating things to real life situations. With the dystopian societies we talked about how dystopian societies are present all over the place and are a very important aspect to society.
Another part of this course involved constructing a 10 page primary research paper relating to an an issue that is occurring in our society. My issue dealt with environmental facets such as air quality relating to multiple discourses. The discourses that I chose to discuss and show their opinions were the city, state, and federal and global level. It encompassed a wide range of topics and really gave me a grasp on what is actually going on in our society. Currently Cincinnati is the number eight polluted city for air quality in the United States.
In this experience I was an active student who engaged in class. I felt like this course met my expectations. It stimulated my thinking abilities and enhanced my writing skills. This experience is similar to my English course in my senior year of high school in respect that we did similar things.
This experience was meaningful because I was able to get to know my honors mates better and get a closer bond witht hem. I made some really good friends in that class, and I really value that experience. My prior experiences in my upper level high school English prepared me best for this class. It gave me the grammar skills and writing skills to perform well. Overall this experience was informative, challenging, and enriching.
